Higher Learning Scholarship Ministry
Guidelines for Scholarship
Awards
The Higher Learning Scholarship Ministry is into two (2) divisions:
the Elementary Division and Middle/High School Division. The Minister
of Children's Ministry will be responsible for the Elementary
Division of the HL Scholarship Ministry, grades K-5. All applications
in that particular age group will turn in their applications to
the Minister of Children's Ministry. The Director of Youth/Student
Ministries, Rev. Kenneth Curry, will to be responsible for the
Middle/High School Division of the HL Scholarship Ministry, grades
6-12. Likewise, all applicants in that age group will turn in
their applications to that division of the Ministry.
In order to participate in the FBC Higher
Learning Scholarship and Excellence Ministry, all participants
must be active members of Friendship Baptist Church. Active member
is defined as: regularly attending worship services on Sundays,
regularly attending Sunday School and/or a Bible Study, as well
as participating in at least one other church ministry. All applicants
must submit a completed application to the Higher Learning Scholarship
Committee. Applicants in the 4th through 12th grade must also
submit a type written essay with their application. Each applicant
will be assigned a sponsor who is a member of the HL Scholarship
Ministry. It is the responsibility of the applicant to keep in
touch with his/her sponsor each month to update them on their
scholastic, athletic and spiritual progress. All copies of grades,
progress reports, certificates and letters of recognition from
school and the community must be submitted to applicant's sponsor.
All materials must be submitted to sponsors by determined deadlines.
There will be NO EXCEPTIONS!!!
Eligibility Requirements for Scholarships &
Savings Bonds:
Senior Scholarship Awards:
Rev. Dr. James D. Carrington Award (1)- Candidate
must be an active member of Friendship for at least one year and
demonstrate exemplary leadership qualities and aptitude. Likewise,
student must regularly attend Sunday School and/or Bible Study
as well as be involved in another ministry within the church.
Two (2) reference letters must be submitted. One letter of reference
from a principal, a counselor or a teacher at affiliating high
school and one from a member of Friendship. Proof of acceptance
at a four-year college/university. Minimum of 3.75 cumulative
GPA to receive this $2000 Scholarship Award.
A. D. Kendrick Founders' Award (2)- Candidates
must be an active member of Friendship for at least one year and
demonstrate leadership qualities. Likewise, student must regularly
attend Sunday School and/or Bible Study as well as be involved
in another ministry within the church Two (2) reference letters
must be submitted. One letter of reference from a principal, a
counselor or a teacher at affiliating high school and one from
a member of Friendship. Proof of acceptance at a four-year college/university.
Minimum of 3.5 cumulative GPA to receive this $1500 Scholarship
Award.
Friendship Award (3)- Candidate must be an
active member of Friendship for at least one year demonstrating
leadership potential. Likewise, student must regularly attend
Sunday School and/or Bible Study as well as be involved in another
ministry within the church. Two (2) reference letters must be
submitted. One letter of reference from a principal, a counselor
or a teacher at affiliating high school and one from a member
of Friendship. Proof of acceptance at a four-year college/university.
Minimum of 3.25 cumulative GPA to receive this $1250 Scholarship
Award and Computer.
Higher Learning Award- Candidate must be
an active member of Friendship for at least one year demonstrating
leadership potential. Likewise, student must regularly attend
Sunday School and/or Bible Study as well as be involved in another
ministry within the church. Two (2) reference letters must be
submitted. One letter of reference from a principal, a counselor
or a teacher at affiliating high school and one from a member
of Friendship. Proof of acceptance at a four-year college/university.
Minimum of 3.0 cumulative GPA to receive this $1000 Scholarship
Award and Computer.
Virginia Lineburger Service Award- Candidates
must be an active member of Friendship for at least one year,
demonstrating outstanding and tireless service at Friendship and
Community at large. Likewise, student must regularly attend Sunday
School and/or Bible Study as well as be involved in another ministry
within the church. Two (2) reference letters must be submitted.
One letter of reference from a principal, a counselor or a teacher
a teacher and/or community service advisor at affiliating high
school and one from a member of Friendship. Proof of acceptance
to a four-year college/university, or registration to a two-year
institution and/or a trade/professional school. Minimum of 2.75
cumulative to receive this $750 Scholarship Award.
Director's Award (4)- Candidates must be
an active member of Friendship for at least one year. Likewise,
student must regularly attend Sunday School and/or Bible Study
as well as be involved in another ministry within the church.
Two (2) reference letters from a principal, a counselor, a teacher
and/or community service advisor. Proof of acceptance to a four-year
college/university, or registration to a two-year institution
and/or a trade/professional school. Minimum of 2.50 cumulative
GPA to receive this $500 Scholarship Award.
Middle and High School Awards:
Future Leaders Award:
This award is given to those individuals demonstrating excellent
leadership qualities and aptitude. Candidates must receive a letter
of recommendation. This award is presented to the top four (4)
freshmen, the top three (3) sophomores, and the top three (3)
juniors with the highest GPA (minimum of 3.5) and evaluation points
for the award year. This is a savings bond for $200.
Academic Excellence:
This award is given to all active participants who maintain a
3.5 GPA or higher for the award year. This is a savings bond for
$150.
Elementary, Middle and High School Awards:
Honors:
This award is given to all students who maintain a minimum of
a 3.0 GPA for the award year. This is a savings bond for $100.
Scholastic Progress Award:
This award is given to two (2) elementary school students, two
(2) intermediate school students, one (1) freshman, one (1) sophomore,
and one (1) junior and who have demonstrated the most improvement
over the award year. This is a savings bond for $100
Christian Growth Award:
This award is given to those candidates who are currently participating
in two (2) or more church auxiliaries. They must demonstrate above
average dedication and growth within their designated auxiliaries
with a recommendation letter from the teacher/leader that highlights
the particular areas of growth. The minimum GPA requirement is
a 2.5 or higher. This is a savings bond for $100.
Kindergarten Award:
All participating kindergarten students will receive a Savings
Bond in the amount of $25 contingent upon their participation
in Sunday School and one other ministry.
